Difference between Niguiri, Sashimi, and Sushi
It’s never been easier to consume these delightful specialties for a special occasion or a quick lunch. But do you know the difference between one and the other? If you don’t, all our staff is willing to walk you through the options.
Nigiri: a slice of raw fish over pressed vinegared-rice. This vinegared-rice balled and pressed with two fingers forms the base of the nigiri. A slice of raw fish is then placed on the rice base, at times with a speck of wasabi. Notice that when you dip nigiri into soy sauce, only the fish part must be dipped, not the rice. Otherwise, the rice pellets will come apart and you’ll have soy sauce rice soup.
Sashimi: eating raw fish without the vinegared-rice. Sashimi consists of raw fish slices accompanied by several types of garnishes. The freshness of fish, the way it’s sliced, presented and garnished, determined the quality of sashimi. Common garnishes include shredded daikon radish, shiso leaves, or toasted nori (seaweed).
Both nigiri and sashimi are accompanied with pickled ginger and wasabi with soy sauce.
Sushi: (Pronounced Zushi) is a Japanese dish with roots originating from South East Asia, along with what is now known as the Mekong River. Technically, the word sushi means ‘vinegared rice’. The Japanese word su means vinegar, and shi is from meshi, the Japanese word for rice. A type of food made of vegetables, cooked rice, seafood, and tropical fruits. Japanese people cook sushi in accordance with food ingredients that they want to incorporate. There are several types of sushi. Different types of sushi commonly have cooked rice which they commonly called as Sumeshi or Shari. You can cook sushi using white rice or brown rice. It is often prepared with vegetables and seafood including raw fish. You can add soy sauce, wasabi, and ginger for final garnishing of your sushi.
